September Overview

Hello Families, Partners, and LTI Community
It's September and the kids are back in school. Is it more or less hectic for you now? Your FIRST 5 LTI is here year round and ready to connect with our families, partners and the larger community. Best wishes for all of us involved with children and schools as we begin the 2012-13 school year.

Here is your September Blog.

News & Highlights:
·     ZUMBA!! You are invited to our FREE Fall Zumba Fiesta at Mercy Street FRC on Friday September 28 from 6:00-7:30pm. Kids can participate in their own kidzone and those who do not wish to participate can go into the childcare. Pre-registration required, childcare provided. For registered FIRST 5 families only (contact us to register with an intake).
·         Halloween Costume Exchange Party in Mountain View (Mercy Street FRC). Donations will be collected at all our sites and classes from now through the September 28, and the pick-up will be on September 29. See Mountain View, Sunnyvale & Cupertino pages for details.
·         Fall Health and Fitness Events. FIRST 5 LTI received a grant from Lucille Packard to improve health and fitness in our community. We will be partnering with local health & fitness providers to offer classes for kids, parents, and kids/parents together. See the city pages for special events happening between now and November, like TaeKwon Do for kids, a group hike to Rancho San Antonio, Zumba classes, Infant Massage, and more!
·         Sometimes Once just isn't enough! In order to reach as many families as possible, we have a "once a week" rule, where families can only take one Arts Enrichment/Play & Learn class per week. Several of our families really wanted more, and have started informal groups at Escuela and Mercy Street. These classes are open only to the families they are inviting to keep it small as they learn how to facilitate the groups. We love their enthusiasm and commitment to their children's learning. If you would like to start your own informal group, please be in touch with our FRC Staff.
·         Fall Programming Launches at MVLA. Our fall programming collaborative with Mountain View Los Altos Adult Education starts this month. We have a full year of activities planned - they're almost like a fifth FRC! The year will begin with a cultural Play & Learn Around the World Arts Enrichment Class to teach parents new ways of engaging with their children. We will also be offering our core parenting classes (SEEDS, Abriendo Puertas and Triple P), along with other requested classes such as helping parents deal with stress. We will be working with the Young Parent Program (parents still in high school), and the ESL class, where parents study English and children are in preschool. This year, many of the classes will be taught by our highly trained volunteers. We are proud of our collaboration and looking forward to seeing what we create together with this community.
·         Outdoor Play & Learn. We had our last Outdoor Play & Learn in Cupertino on Friday, August 31st at Wilson Park. We were supposed to have our popular “water day” on our last day of class. Unfortunately, the weather did not permit us to. Nonetheless, we still had a lot of fun ending the class with a lot of songs and games! Many new families came to learn about us through attending the program. Families were encouraged to participate in our exercise activities and to incorporate physical activity into their daily routine. We’ll see you next year in the park when the weather warms up again!
