September Overview

Greetings Families, Partners, and LTI Community

Welcome to Fall and the start of the brand new school year. If your children are younger, you might not yet be in the rhythm of the school cycle, but families with preschoolers and kindergarteners will be shifting to this new routine. Check out two videos from our friends at Kids in the House on bedtime routines and making school drop offs easier.

Here is news from across the region

Kiwanis and Lions Give Backpacks to Families in Need
Many thanks to the Mountain View Lions Club for their generous donation of 100 backpacks for families this year. See what Mountain View Patch said and hear Program Director, Maddi Pascua, talk about our program. We are very proud!

Vargas FRC Opening a Success!

August 21 marked the Grand Opening of our Vargas Elementary Family Resource Center in Sunnyvale! We started with our “I’m Ready for Kindergarten” year-long course, and have quickly added a Play and Learn and Bilingual Storytime. We hope you will come and check out the space. See our calendar and Sunnyvale Pages for details on our schedule.

Escuela Families Discover Exploratorium Together

Families from Escuela’s Wednesday morning class took a group field trip to San Francisco to see the Exploratorium, courtesy of friends from our hosts at the Los Altos United Methodist Church.  Together, they organized taking the train and spending the day in the city.  The children loved the adventure and we were happy to see them have a chance to explore the museum!

Staff Changes for our CHAC/FIRST 5 Team

Good Bye, Julia! In August, we said a fond farewell to Julia Zhu our Cupertino Community Worker. Julia started our successful Mandarin Play and Learn and our very popular Mandarin Outdoor Play and Learn. Our families will miss Julia’s dedication and huge passion for children. She moved to Southern California, but if you would like to send her a message, you can send it to mercystreetfrc@gmail.com and we will pass it on for you.

Welcome Jeanette! In July, we welcomed Jeanette Santana as our new Mountain View Community Worker. Jeanette has a background working in child development centers and literacy programs. She is the mother of a 10-month-old and is looking forward to helping other parents and children grow and find community here.

Welcome Francisco! In September, we welcome Francisco Hernández to the team. Francisco will be the Community Worker “at large” for our team (meaning he will be working across the region). Francisco was a participant in our FIRST 5 program through Catholic Charities and volunteered in many of our classes. He is an enthusiastic proponent of our program and we hope that he will encourage other fathers to become involved in their child’s development.
